Overview
What is an air shower:
Air showers are regularly utilized in industries such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronics manufacturing, and semiconductor fabrication where it is crucial to maintain cleanliness and control contamination.
A personnel shower is a specially designed enclosure or chamber that is used to remove contaminants, especially particulate matter, from the surface of objects, clothing, or people before they enter a cleanroom or other controlled environment.
The personnel decontamination air shower from PBSC is available in two designs. Both choices remove particles from the operative with high-velocity air jets as they enter a clean environment or exit a contaminated environment, with 9 x adjustable stainless-steel nozzles on each of the two side walls in the shower.
The air shower cycle duration and velocity of air jets are optimized to maximize decontamination efficiency.
The arrangement and orientation of the nozzles in the air shower chamber are designed to ensure uniform coverage and distribution of the filtered air over the entire surface of the person or object.
The air shower from PBSC is also referred to as a cleanroom air shower, air shower room, air shower safe chamber, and misting shower and comes in two designs:
- With a separate AHU that has “Safe Change” filters.
- With the integrated Air Handling Unit (AHU) on the top of the shower
The filtered air is released through the nozzles at high velocity to dislodge and remove contaminants from the surfaces of the person or object passing through the air shower.
The construction can either be stainless-steel or powder-coated steel with interlocked float/toughened glass personnel doors.
The door design provides a maximum clear opening width with the frame finishing flush with the internal panels. (straight-through-design only).
The PLC automatically turns on the high-performance 24VDC LED light as the operative enters the shower, powered from the PLC with no mains power in the shower cubicle.
PBSC’s design has the lowest nozzle at only 21.5cm from the finish floor level, and a low-level return on each wall panel to the AHU built into the top of the shower cubicle.
The air shower controls lock the doors and run the fans to provide airflow when the shower cycle is started by the operative.
Note the shower has a low power usage with a highly efficient fan. The total power requirement is only 20Amps @ 110 – 208V, 60HZ, 1 Ph.

The cleanroom air shower has the final assembly in place, requiring no cranes or special access on-site, with the largest piece fitting through a single doorway.

- Allen Bradley PLC
- Siemens S1200 PLC with a touch screen in the shower (or on the PLC cabinet) to show the shower status. Alarms can be seen and cleared from the screen.

PBSC’s new design has been enhanced not only in aesthetics but also in functionality. The high-performance fans are now strategically fitted to each side wall, ensuring optimal airflow through each plenum for more effective decontamination for your personnel.
The air shower is made of either stainless steel or powder-coated steel. It has interlocked float and toughened glass personnel doors, with 9 adjustable stainless-steel nozzles on each of the side walls, totaling 18.
There are three types of air showers available:
- 2 Door Straight for straight-through transfer
- 2 Door Right Angle for angled transfer
- 3 Door T-Section for straight-through or angle transfer with the shower mounted between three rooms in a T-Section configuration.

Regular maintenance and cleaning of PBSC’s air showers is essential to ensure optimal performance and prevent contamination build-up.
Filters should be inspected and replaced regularly to maintain air quality and prevent filter bypass.
