PBSC’s Pass Through Hatches – What are they and how do they work?

PBSC’s pass through hatches, also known as a pass box, transfer hatch or pass chamber, are among the best on the market. These hatches help reduce the risk of physical movement or transfer of harmful bacteria and pressure loss when transferring equipment between different classification areas, within cleanrooms, or in controlled environments.

Pass through hatches are designed with two doors that are located on opposite sides of a wall or partition. One door opens into one area while the other door opens into the adjacent area. This system uses two doors to prevent direct airflow between environments, thereby reducing the risk of contamination.

The hatches from PBSC are designed for easy cleaning and maintenance, making them great for passing products, equipment, or even paperwork between sterile and non-sterile areas while preserving the integrity of each environment.

Effective sealing is crucial to prevent the exchange of air and contaminants between the two environments connected by the pass through hatch. PBSC’s interlocking mechanism ensures an airtight seal when the door is closed.

Used within many cleanroom facilities, providing a clean and beautiful hatch for maximum impact.

The minimal visible fixings or recesses on the hatch facilitate easy cleaning, and the completely frameless glass door leaf provides a beautiful look that gives maximum visibility and natural light into and through the hatch.

PBSC’s pass through hatches are cost-effective for a variety of projects thanks to innovative materials and construction techniques.

Having no internal protruding or recessed areas in the design, thus preventing bacterial growth, allowing for complete sterilization during clean-down.

Interlocking:

Designed with PBSC’s unique mechanical interlocking door system which comes as standard, meaning that both doors cannot be opened simultaneously. The interlock mechanism ensures the hatch “air” is given time to recover before the other door can be opened and is mounted between the two skins of the hatch, to reduce the risk of tamper.

Also available as an electro-mechanical system to provide timed interlocks for air purge and UV light cycles, etc…

This prevents direct airflow, minimizing the risk of contamination and maintaining room pressure during the transfer process.

Interlocking mechanisms ensure that one door remains closed while the other is open, maintaining the integrity of each environment and facilitating a quick transfer of goods between different grades of rooms.

Airflow Control:

PBSC’s pass through hatches are designed to minimize airflow between the connected environments during material transfer.

The hatch air is “cleaned” following use to either the filtered air level of the supply or the higher classification room.

Construction:

Made from durable smooth non-porous materials, with a choice of:

Polished stainless steel (standard offering) – The hatch shell is manufactured from satin polished stainless steel of double skin construction, all welds will be ground off and polished to match with internal folded corners.

Phenolic resin – The hatch shell is constructed of 16mm (5/8”) thick, matt white, phenolic resin (High Pressure Laminate HPL) with no visible fixings. Internal junctions are finished with a neat silicone fillet and all external edges will be raised to form a smooth, easily cleaned unit.

Powder-coated steel – The hatch outer shell is manufactured with a powder-coated zintec and the inner shell of the double skin construction is in stainless steel, all welds will be ground off and polished to match with internal folded corners.

Compatible with all types of walls and construction and available with glass or solid doors depending on privacy requirements.

Available with internal support shelves in either glass or stainless steel and stainless steel support frames.

Size and Configuration:

Every hatch comes in various sizes and configurations to accommodate the end user and specific application requirements.

Single or double door configuration options are available including right angle designs.

Easy Clean:

The refined design is robust and provides easy cleaning and maintenance.

PBSC’s hatches are designed to be easy to clean and maintain. This makes it great for passing products, equipment, or even paperwork between sterile/clean areas and non-sterile/dirty areas.

PBSC offers an extensive range of hatch options which include:

Trolley/Floor Mounted Hatch – Designed to allow wheeled trolleys to be passed between different grade rooms and fixed directly to the finished flooring.
